How Many Tiles Are in an American Mahjong Set?

An American Mahjong set has 152 tiles: 108 suit tiles, 16 winds, 12 dragons, 8 flowers, and 8 jokers. Here's the full breakdown — and why it differs from a Chinese set.

An American Mahjong set has 152 tiles. That's 8 more than a standard Chinese set (144), and those extra 8 are the Jokers. (A Chinese set already includes 8 Flowers; the American twist is that its Flowers are all interchangeable.)

The full breakdown

  • 108 suit tiles — Bams, Craks, and Dots, numbered 1–9, four of each (3 × 9 × 4)
  • 16 Winds — North, East, West, South, four of each
  • 12 Dragons — Red, Green, and Soap (white), four of each
  • 8 Flowers — all interchangeable in American play
  • 8 Jokers — the wild tiles, used in groups of three or more

Add those up — 108 + 16 + 12 + 8 + 8 — and you get 152.

Why the count matters

If you're buying a set, make sure it's an American Mahjong set with the Jokers and Flowers. A Chinese set won't have the 8 Jokers the game relies on.
